Del Monte Pudding In A Can

I remember the only time getting Del Monte pudding in a can was times when I would visit my grandmother. She always kept some on hand for my cousins and me.  We would gather on her front porch and eat these little cans full of goodness.  What about you?  Do You Remember Del Monte Pudding Cups when they were in a can?  Share your memories in the comments!

I remember Del Monte too! I loved eating the pudding and the creamy texture! How I missed this!:( The puddings on the market today don't hold up the Del Monte standard.

Ah, childhood memories. Sadly, things always taste better in memory, than in reality. :)

Nothing will ever be as tasty as pudding in a can, they should bring it back...

OMG, I have thought about these for years! My aunt used to keep them at her house, they tasted better than any pudding now! I wish they would bring the Del Monte canned pudding back!

I use to love these lil guys growing up, you have fruits , tomato paste, etc, but no pudding, why stop reproduction, just like my favorite hostess blueberry fruit pies...but like they say, every good thing must one day come to an end.

My favorite pudding ever!!! Pudding today don't compare:( I don't understand why they no longer make the pudding like this but they still have the fruit in a can

I used to work for Del Monte foods in their Pudding manufacturing plant in Rochelle Il. from 1989 to 1999 We were part of the food division owned by RJ Reynolds and so was Kraft foods. I worked there for three years, then they merged us into Kraft and the tin cans turned into the Plastic Handi-snaks. worked for them for a total of 10 years. I miss those little tin cans. On a side note, nothing in this world smells as bad as the time that Herb Fridge (yes his real name) one of the mixers in the plant, burnt a batch of Butterscotch pudding one day. Thick, black, greasy smoke filled the air of the plant and to this day whenever i eat butterscotch i still smell that lol. soon after 2000 ( not sure of the date) the shut the plant down and shipped the factory to Mexico to make it cheaper...because they put friends and family out of work i no longer eat handi snaks.

I too have fond memories of my Grandmother purchasing delmonte chocolate pudding cups for me. This brand was certainly the best! It'd be a dream come true if they'd bring them back.

Well, my dad worked for Del Monte in Stockton, CA and he was the main mechanic on the Pudding Cup machine that punched out all those pudding cups. He moved our family from Hayward, CA in 1969 to Stockton, CA. When me and my sister used to go to visit the plant he would let us watch the machine, and give us a tour of all the working parts coming together to make those delicious pudding cups. The best part was that Del Monte two times a year would let employees buy cases of all the products they made, so our house was a Del Monte house in the pantry. Back then a whole case of the pudding cups which I believe was 8-4 packs, was like $2.49 a case for employees, this was in the early to late 70's, then they disappeared off the list, not sure why, but then they had the Fruit cups, so naturally we converted over to those. My favorite was the Chocolate Fudge, they made a regular Chocolate as well, but I preferred the fudge version better, they also had a Vanilla, and Butterscotch. The reason I found this site was to solve an disagreement with my wife about the fact that Del Monte made pudding cups, I proved that indeed they did with your site. Thanks A.M.

I used to take Delmonte chocolate pudding cans to work for lunch dessert or as a snack. Of course you can make custard yourself, but these were like home made, and not of cold instant mix. There's another great custard on the market, 'Ambrosia Devon', but that's too expensive, although it has a full on taste too and not too sweet.

Why can't they make these again!!! When I was pregnant I started to crave for these puddings before I even remembered they existed. My cravings never went away.......

Yes I remember these like yesterday it's nothing like the pudding they have
now.

my mom would put them in my lunch, I remember breaking the tab off and having a hard time getting into the can. I loved that pudding in a can.

I googled del Monte pudding because I can remember how good it tasted and I was wondering if they were still around. Bummer. Lol

Just ate a lame handi snack chocolate pudding. As I thought about the lackluster flavor - I remembered the Del Monte ones from my 70's childhood. OMG, they were the best tasting snacks ever! I had to find out what happened to them & stumbled on to this page. Misery loves company, so I'm glad I'm not alone in missing them!

Best tasting snack ever as a kid. RIP Metal Cups....

Kraft acquired Del Montes pudding division in 95. Over the years the brands have condensed. Sadly it's never coming back.

The best pudding ever. I loved this stuff!

Just watched Bill & Ted's Excellent adventure and when they got to the part where they had to repair their phone booth antenna, they used chewing gums and these pudding tins and I immediately remembered how much I LOVED them! I wish they were still around!!!

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who misses those cans of pudding. :-(

sadly i was born to little too late by the time i was in elementary school i watched this show called Benji a 1974 movie about a dog and in the movie had dell Monte pudding in it sadly when i told my parents why i couldn't get those in the later 2000's they said they stopped manufacturing them in the markets around the late 70's a lot of research concludes that being born in the early 2000's made me miss a lot of pudding cups :( even my parents tried them.

There isn't a chocolate pudding out there today that compares to the del Monte pudding in the cans from years ago. It had a one of a kind flavor. I wish they would bring it back!

Kroger carries a canned pudding called Thank-You and its pretty good. Not as good as Del Monte was but better than kraft handi-snack pudding for sure!

Jello brand sugar free dark chocolate pudding cups are decent and are in the refrigerator section at Kroger. Walmart doesn't have them.

Bring them back please

It is sad these have gone away.....I tell my kids of my memories of this delicious creamy perfect pudding!

These were awesome...the taste was great. and you always licked the extra pudding off of the lid & surprisingly no one ever cut themselves doing that..Awww grade school lunch memories

RJ Reynolds the tobacco company?

I remember how good the chocolate pudding was. It was a very distinct taste that at 41 yrs old I still crave. I would eat one most every day after school while I watched Wonder Woman.

Unknown said...

I remember in 1986 when I was four years old, the babysitter would give me Del Monte banana pudding, the best and farthest back memory I have of the best taste ever.

Unknown said...

I miss this pudding so much.No pudding comes close to it.I grew up in Baltimore, and my grandmother would give it to us.Snack pack comes close enough to the taste, but there was nothing like vanilla, and chocolate del Monte puddings. Can Del Monte come back with maybe a season of puddings once a year or something. We need this pudding in our lives.

Here it is 1:50 in the morning and I just had a snack pack chocolate pudding, as I was eating it I remembered my childhood getting a Del Monte chocolate pudding can and peeling that top back and enjoying that amazing taste, sadly the pudding in the plastic cups today doesn't compare to the pudding in those little tin cups in the 70's. How I wish I could enjoy one again if only for a moment, its truly an amazing taste I'll never forget.

Unknown said...

I wish it would make a comeback! Best childhood memories eating Del monte pudding.

Anonymous said...

No, I remember those puddings from the 80s and the can actually tasted better than the stuff they have in the plastic cups now. Tasted rich and creamy.

Anonymous said...

Oh those puddings were so good! I used to get them in my lunchbox back in the 80s. The new puddings just don’t compare. The closest thing that I’ve had to them was vanilla pudding from my son’s daycare. The cook said that it came from Sysco food distribution in a large can that the daycare served in little plastic cups.

Such a memory...when my parents divorced, my dad would always bring me a pile of the Del Monte cups because he knew that my mom would not buy them. He would bring me the pudding and fruit cups, to make sure I had a snack after school or on the weekends. It seemed to drive my mom crazy that he'd load her new house up with this stuff, but I would always sneak a peek of her snacking on the chocolate fudge ones after she thought I was in the bed. He would also do the same thing with Royal snack cakes, as he worked across the street from the factory and knew the day that the company store would have to toss hundreds of boxes of Little Debbie's competitor in the trash. He would go just before noon, before the carts of discard were purged. My dad knew the manager and talked him into letting my dad have a full-size paper bag full of whatever he wanted for free. Dad would split the rations between me and his office. Dad passed in July 2018 and the memories like this make the void bearable.

Unknown said...

I was just thinking about the same thing... I had it in my lunch when I was in daycare. That was the last time I remember having it. I still crave it at times. I’ve tried others over the year and haven’t eaten pudding since... lol it just isn’t right. I google it and couldn’t believe it when I seen it.

I constantly crave these pudding cups! No pudding has ever come close to the taste and consistency. However, Trader Joe's Belgian Chocolate pudding is really close! If you haven't tried it, you should!

I remember their banana pudding tasting completely different than what you can get now in the plastic cups. Someone told me that it's because they used real bananas in the recipe, not some synthetic flavoring they use now. I'd risk botulism if they had a pack on ebay right now swear to god.

VegasJames said...

Is it possible to get the original Del Monte pudding recipes? Of course each recipe would have to be reduced in size to fit our stove tops. I would make"from scratch" if I could get that real pudding taste like Del Monte puddings had.

There has NEVER been a pudding soooo good! I've wondered for years if anyone else remembered pudding in an can. It makes me very happy to see these posts; proving I'm not crazy, the perfect pudding really did exist in the "good old days." Wish they could bring them back.

Unknown said...

I found a pudding cup that is close as you can get to the delmonte can pudding.. the cheesecake factory decadent desserts .. the vanilla fudge duet is two layer vanilla and chocolate. It is so good it brings childhood back

Unknown said...

Try the cheesecake factory decadent desserts vanilla fudge duet. It's the closest thing really good

They were the absolute best! Nothing compares. In Canada there was a Nestle brand along with Delmonte. All the flavours (chocolate, rice pudding, butterscoth were amazing! Miss these little cans of goodness to this day!

I still miss them. :(

You might try Swiss Miss vanilla pudding. It vaguely resembles DelMonte vanilla pudding, imo. Not exact, just somewhat. You can find it in the refrigerated section at the grocery stores that carry Swiss Miss.

I have craved the banana pudding in a can ever since they went to plastic cups. 30 years later I STILL CRAVE IT. The plastic ones JUST DON'T TASTE THE SAME. Please just one limited edition run! I remember always trying to lick the last bits out of the can without cutting your mouth! The good ole days!

What is a good replacement pudding? I REALLY MISS DELMONTE PUDDING!

I have to strongly disagree with the person who said "Ah, childhood memories. Sadly, things always taste better in memory, than in reality."

Del Monte pudding cups disappeared when I was about 9 or 10 years old. After that my parents tried several other brands, but I wasn't impressed. Del Monte pudding cups had ruined me for all other pudding. Over the years I tried a fair number of other brands, and they all fell short.

In college (early 90s), I discovered to my delight that a non-chain supermarket nearby sold Del Monte pudding cups. After not tasting them for at least 10 years, I found that they were BETTER than I remembered. This shows that my memory wasn't idealized by nostalgia, but on the contrary had faded with time. It also rules out that they my memory of how good they were was exaggerated by having come from the perspective of a child's taste buds, because by this point I had very adult tastes in general.

Those of us who pine for Del Monte pudding cups are not just being tricked by nostalgia for childhood. They really did blow all other brands out of the sky.

BTW, to the anonymous person who asked about a replacement pudding, I recommend Great Value. I haven't tasted a Del Monte pudding cup in 30 years, so I can't say how similar they are, but they beat Snack Pack and any other store brand I've tried, and they do remind me more of Del Monte pudding cups than any other (though still not as good).

The infuriating part is that I only discovered them about a year and a half ago, and now it seems that the butterscotch flavor has been discontinued. It's just not fair!! But their vanilla pudding is still better than any other brand I know of. I'd love to know who manufactures it, and whether the butterscotch is still available under any other brand.

And you ain't wrong there buddy del Monte rice pudding tops them all and will continue to

I remember loving that chocolate pudding in the can in the early 80’s. Every time I think of it I also remember slicing my fingers and tongue trying to get every last bit. The good ole days…

Anonymous said...

The trick was to be able to lick the lid without slicing your tongue. My dad use to buy me these at Daves in Justice WV when I would go haul logs with him in his Autocar. Love and miss you dad—Travis
